Want to know the story behind this story: 'A Switch in Time'?

I couldn't wait to interview, author Casi McLean about her recent novel entitled, 'A Switch in Time: The President is Missing'. Casi is a USA Today & Amazon bestselling author of many soul stirring, captivating novels, books and short stories. But I innately sensed that there was a 'must know' back story to this most recent book project. One definitely worth sharing with our respective and potential reading audiences. And how did I know there was a terrific story behind this story?

The book's title!

It's Cover!

Casi's personal note to her readers!

So with my professional public policy/government and personal inspirational background, I immediately added 'A Switch in Time' to my must-read list. How could I not read a book where?-- a) the main character happens to be the President of the United States and seemingly in two different eras or time periods; b) has 'two' personas; and, c) two authors created and contributed to the story in two diffent time periods.

EXERPT: 'A Switch in Time'

“Those who control the present, control the past and

those who control the past, control the future.

George Orwell’s—1984”

Present Day

Emery Clayton peered through a dusty windowpane unnoticed from the grounds below. He could almost hear the whispers of those who strode before him. Hidden behind storage closets and nestled beneath the sloped ceiling on the north side of the White House, this secluded attic chamber offered the president a secret refuge to escape the bustling activity of the halls below. Emery might never have found the room himself, had he not searched for a quiet spot away from the madding crowd.

For the last three years, he found solace within this secret space…a place to think and sort through the dissidence running rampant in the America he so dearly loved. As President, he straddled the pinnacle of a double-edged sword threatening the fabric of the nation’s democracy.

Dropping his gaze, he turned and paced toward an old wooden secretary. No longer did the Resolute Desk sit with pride in the Oval Office. Cast aside in a forgotten room by his predecessors, the oak treasure, an 1880 gift from Queen Victoria, now gathered dust and cobwebs, a powerless image of a shattered country. Pondering how he’d heal the polarized Congress and divided population paralyzing the nation, he resolved to unite America. Never would he sit idly by and watch this country wither and die.

Emery ran a palm over the smooth surface. His finger touched an etched insignia carved into the wooden drawer. Drawing his glasses from his breast pocket, he perched them on the end of his nose and read aloud the words inscribed.

“God grant me wisdom to light the way and the strength of our forefathers to save the day.”

A heartbeat later, President Emery Clayton III vanished into a swirling tempest of blue haze.

*Responses to my 'The Story Behind The Story' Interview Questions

ST: What do you think your mother would say to you regarding your adaptation of her original book?

CML: At first, she might be a little concerned, because she never thought her writing was good enough to publish. But ultimately, she’d be so proud of our book and excited the story hit Amazon # 1 new release and #1 in its categories during week one.

ST: How did you feel after completing and publishing A Switch in Time: The President is Missing?

CML: I was so excited, but, in light of America’s mind set during the COVID pandemic, I was a little nervous about how my book would be received. Now, I’m so thrilled and humbled at the reviews our story has generated.

ST: How much or what major twists/events did you incorporate due to the timeline differences between your mother’s era and yours?

CML: I added the entire time travel element and tamed a bit of the 6os jargon. I had to regroup my mother’s POV’s and adjust scenes, but the storyline is pure and her spin on everything aligned with mine. The stunning description of the airplane and the crash was all her, and so was the island description.

ST: Your cover is very intriguing. Was it developed before or after you completed the story? What factors did you/your designer consider in its development?

CML: I told the story to my cover designer, and she said she had a perfect cover idea. The next day she sent me a mock-up and I loved it. She’s amazing! She visualizes my story from my description, and I usually have very few changes.

ST: What was your biggest concern (if any) in writing this book?

CML: My biggest concern was to do justice to my mother’s original manuscript.

ST: Were there certain scenes that were harder for you to write than others? If so, which scenes and why were they more difficult for you to write?

CML: The scenes where the two men felt unwarranted hatred toward each other were the most difficult. When I write, I try to get inside my character’s head, and to feel that kind of unfounded fiery vitriol was a challenge.

ST: What do you want readers to take away from your book? How do you want them to feel? CML: My greatest wish––and I’m sure my mother’s wish would be the same––is to spark an ember in the heart of everyone who reads our story––despite our unique differences, we are all one human race.

ST: Would you write a sequel to this book? Why or why not?

CML: No. This book is one of a kind. I could never add anything that could send a better message.

The President Is Missing…

"A note from the author: My mother, Eleanor LaRue, initially wrote this manuscript in 1960 but never had it published...she left it to me when she passed away in 1995...**BEFORE** I began writing. I found the story when I moved a few years ago and felt compelled to bring her story to life. Over the last two years, I've updated, edited, tweaked, and added a time travel element for a contemporary spin. My mom lived decades before her time, but her message is as significant today as it was in 1960. Thank you for reading our novel!"~~Written by Author Casi McLean

Editorial Review:

A Switch in Time is a compelling thriller ripped from today's headlines. What's ironic about my statement is that this book was written by Casi's mother in the late 1960's. Racial injustice, whether it happens in the 1960's or today, is not only relevant but life-changing. The time has come for all citizens to stand up and say we're in this together. The authors weave an adrenaline-boosting thriller with an important message. The characters are so well-drawn, I was sucked right in. I whipped through the pages faster than my fingers would allow. Emory and James are at the heart of this story and their relationship from mortal enemies to friends is heart-wrenching. The plot moves at a fast pace and there is plenty of action to please any thriller reader."
